Proposals to cut phone charges unveiled
Proposals to cut additional costs charged by telephone and internet providers have been unveiled by the sector's regulatory body.
Ofcom's plans have been published to encourage companies to provide clear statements on the extra charges and also make it easier for consumers to understand them.
Ed Richards, the body's chief executive, has said that the proposals to be transparent on late payment, contract cancelling and billing charges would give the public "an all round fair deal".
"Our proposals will encourage companies to be open and straightforward about additional charges where they feel it is necessary to include them," he explained.
"In addition, our proposals mean that, in some cases, additional charges will be subject to clear limits which would provide direct protection for consumers."
Ofcom also recently welcomed the EU Commission's endorsement of its plans to regulate the wholesale broadband access in the UK.
The proposals, which include the removal of regulatory obligations in areas of the country where strong competition exists, were originally published in November.
